Description

Imidacloprid

Imidacloprid is a systemic insecticide widely used to control pests in gardens and turf. It is also used for the treatment of fleas in domestic pets and in the protection of trees from boring insects.

Imidacloprid was made to mimic nicotine. Nicotine is naturally found in many plants, including tobacco, and is toxic to insects. Products containing imidacloprid come in many forms, including liquids, granules, dusts, and packages that dissolve in water.

Imidacloprid is a systemic insecticide, which means that plants take it up from the soil or through the leaves and it spreads throughout the plant’s stems, leaves, fruit, and flowers. Insects that chew or suck on the treated plants end up eating the imidacloprid as well. Once the insects eat the imidacloprid, it damages their nervous system and they eventually die.

Benefits

Imidacloprid is considered very safe for farmers as mammals have a very different central nervous system to insects. Being systemic its effects work for a prolonged time however there is very little residue left on the outside of the plant

Targeted Pests

Targeted Pests include aphids, thrips, locusts, termites, ants, fleas and beetles.

Imidacloprid is very toxic to non targeted insects including bees and to aquatic invertebrates.

Brand names of Imadacloprid include Confidor, Merit, Advantage, Conquest, Gaucho and Spectrum.
