Zoysia Australis is one of Perth's most exciting recent turf arrivals — a fine-leaved zoysia variety bred specifically for Australian conditions and available exclusively through Lawn Doctor in Western Australia.

Where most lawn varieties force a trade-off between water efficiency and appearance, Zoysia Australis delivers both. Its deep root system and excellent water use efficiency allow it to maintain colour and density through Perth summers on standard two-day restrictions, while its fine, dense growth habit produces a consistently attractive surface with minimal intervention.

Zoysia Australis is the most naturally weed-resistant variety we grow. Once established, its tight horizontal growth leaves little space for weed seeds to germinate, significantly reducing the herbicide inputs needed to maintain a clean lawn.

Its slower growth rate compared to couch varieties is often seen as a disadvantage but is actually one of its most practical benefits — fewer mowing sessions, less clipping volume and a lawn that holds a consistent appearance for longer between cuts.

Key characteristics:

  • Exceptional drought tolerance and water use efficiency

  • Naturally weed-resistant due to dense, tight growth habit

  • Lower mowing frequency than couch or buffalo varieties

  • Outstanding salt and coastal exposure tolerance

  • Good shade tolerance — suitable for sites with 4+ hours of direct sun

  • AusGAP certified for genetic purity

  • Grown at our Gingin turf farm and cut fresh to order

Orders less than 25sqm can be collected from shop in Wangara.

Zoysia Australis is a premium zoysia grass variety with a medium texture and an attractive blue-green colour. It was bred by Dr Brian Schwartz at the University of Georgia’s Tifton Campus, the same turf research centre behind the popular TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda.

This turf has been developed for performance and durability, making it well-suited to Australian conditions, including Perth’s hot summers and variable soil types.

Why Zoysia Australis Works So Well in Perth

Zoysia Australis stands out because of its ability to adapt where other turf varieties struggle.

It grows strongly in full sun and also performs well in medium shade, tolerating up to 70 percent shade. This makes it ideal for backyards with trees, fencing, or partial shade from buildings.

Its deep root system and spreading rhizomes help it establish quickly and recover from wear and tear. Once established, Zoysia Australis forms a dense, resilient lawn that handles foot traffic, pets, and everyday family use with ease.

Key Benefits of Zoysia Australis Turf

Zoysia Australis delivers practical benefits that matter to Perth homeowners:

  • Low-maintenance turf with reduced mowing requirements

  • Excellent disease resistance

  • Can be mown low, down to 10mm, or left longer for a softer look

  • Fast establishment compared to many other turf types

  • Good wear tolerance for active households

  • Performs well in Perth’s sandy and waxy soils when prepared correctly

If you want a lawn that looks great without constant upkeep, Zoysia Australis is a strong long-term investment.
